Big Green Egg · seven sizes

Big Green Egg sizes

Big Green Egg sizes run from the 10-inch Mini to the 29-inch 2XL, with seven cooking footprints for patios, family dinners, briskets, and large gatherings. The right choice depends on grate area, weight, where the cooker will sit, and how much food you cook at once. Pinecraft keeps all seven sizes on the showroom floor in Sarasota.

Specifications were checked on 2026-09-02 against Big Green Egg's size chart, linked product pages, and size comparison.

Big Green Egg's official size chart lists seven grid diameters, from 10 inches for Mini to 29 inches for 2XL. The product pages publish cooking area and weight for the sizes below. The capacity language in the last column comes from Big Green Egg's own size comparison, with the Mini's cooking capacity taken from its product page.

Match the size to the cook

Mini

For tailgating and boats, I start with the Mini when the cook is personal: a steak, two pork chops, or two chicken breasts. Big Green Egg lists the 10-inch grid, 79 square inches, and 39 pounds. It is easy to carry, but the cooking surface is genuinely small.

MiniMax

MiniMax is my portable step up for a boat day or a tailgate where you want room for a whole chicken. The manufacturer lists a 13-inch grid, 133 square inches, and 76 pounds, plus an ideal capacity of 1 to 3 people. Its carrier matters when the EGG travels.

Small

For a condo lanai on Siesta Key, I first compare the available footprint with the building's fire rules and the manufacturer's safety guidance. Small keeps the 13-inch grid and 133 square inches, but it weighs 80 pounds. Big Green Egg lists it for 1 to 3 people.

Medium

For a family of four in Palmer Ranch, Medium is the size I show first. Big Green Egg recommends Medium for a family of four, and its official page lists a 15-inch grid, 177 square inches, and 114 pounds. That gives a weeknight cook more breathing room than Small.

Large

Large is where I start when a whole turkey or brisket is part of the plan. Big Green Egg lists 262 square inches and 162 pounds, with capacity for a 20-pound turkey on the product page. It is the practical family size when the cook may run all afternoon.

XL

For two briskets plus sides, I bring the XL into the conversation. Its 24-inch grid gives 452 square inches, and the manufacturer lists 219 pounds and an ideal capacity of 6 to 12 people. The extra grate area is useful when the meat is only half the meal.

2XL

2XL is the catering-scale choice. Big Green Egg lists 672 square inches, a 29-inch grid, 375 pounds, and an ideal capacity of 12 to 20 people. I reserve this size for large gatherings and cooks who will use that footprint often, since moving 375 pounds is a serious job.

The right grid changes the cook.

Nests, tables, islands

Nests, tables and built-in islands

Big Green Egg's outdoor-kitchen page names three base choices: a Nest, a table, or the Modular Nest System. The same page says the Modular Nest starts with a Nest Frame, then adds tabletops, cabinets, and storage. For a fixed island, Big Green Egg's safety guidance says to maintain a sufficient air gap around the EGG.

The manufacturer's warranty terms say not to place an EGG directly on a combustible surface. They call for a BGE Metal Nest, Metal Table Nest, or another fireproof barrier. A Table Nest belongs inside a table, island, or surround. Only Mini and MiniMax have a low-profile Nest designed as a free-standing base. These are the placement rules I bring into an island conversation.

We design outdoor kitchens and supply the equipment. Licensed contractors we work with install it.

Try before you buy

Pinecraft rents the Large and XL for one day through fourteen days, so you can see how the footprint works beside your patio, pool deck, or prep table. We also keep all seven Big Green Egg sizes on the showroom floor at 3303 Bahia Vista St in Sarasota. Sample Saturdays are a good time to see an EGG cooking.

Bring the cook you actually want to make, perhaps a turkey at Thanksgiving or a brisket overnight. We can compare the 177-square-inch Medium with the 262-square-inch Large in person, then talk about the support base and the space around it.

EGGcessories that change the size you need

The convEGGtor is a heat-directing barrier. Big Green Egg says it turns the EGG into an outdoor convection oven for indirect cooking, smoking, roasting, and baking. That can make one cooker cover more jobs without adding a second grill.

The EGGspander uses interchangeable parts for direct heat, indirect heat, raised cooking, and multi-tier setups. Big Green Egg's 5-Piece EGGspander page lists a convEGGtor basket, multi-level rack, and two half grids, with cooking height adjustable from 2.5 to 6.5 inches. The 2-Piece Multi-Level Rack can be used upside down for low-level "Cowboy Style" grilling.

Salt air and humidity

Care for a coastal EGG

For a Siesta Key or Longboat Key setup, I pay attention to the metal around the ceramic cooker. Big Green Egg's warranty terms say extreme humidity and sodium chloride can corrode finishes on metal components such as bands, hinges, grids, and draft doors. The manufacturer's safety tips recommend a heavy-duty, ventilated cover and a wind-sheltered spot to limit moisture buildup.

That is the practical coastal note: protect the metal, keep the cooker safely supported, and let the manufacturer's manual and the licensed contractor settle placement details for a built-in island. Read our outdoor kitchen guide for salt air and humidity before you choose the finish and support system.
